Turns out you won't be able to uninstall Windows 11's Recall feature after all

Microsoft has clarified that the option to uninstall the Windows Recall feature, which was recently visible in Windows Settings, is a bug and will not be available when the feature officially launches. Although users will not be able to remove Recall from their systems, they will still have the option to disable it during setup or later through the Recall app in the Start menu. The Recall feature, initially announced in May, faced backlash over privacy concerns, particularly regarding the unencrypted local storage of collected data. This led to a postponement of its launch, which is now expected to enter public preview in October, with a full rollout anticipated in 2025. Microsoft has assured that the feature will be optional and more secure upon release.

It’s not even out yet and they’re already going back on their word, as it’s now described as opt-out instead of opt in. Without being able to uninstall it, it will be yet another user hostile feature that keeps getting “accidentally” re-enabled every time a patch gets installed.

This is a good thing imo. It will just push slightly more people off windows into Linux. Linux desktop marketshare is increasing incredibly quickly the last few years. Probably due to valve and the steam deck. But I think Microsoft butchering windows also has at least a little effect.

Bizarre. “Fuck the users” may as well be the catchphrase of the Windows team at this point.
