Astronomers have warned against colonial practices in the space industry

Astronomers have raised concerns about the potential for colonial practices in the rapidly expanding commercial space industry, drawing parallels to historical European imperialism. A 2023 white paper highlighted the risks of exploiting extraterrestrial environments, echoing the destructive patterns seen on Earth. While some industry leaders, like Robert Zubrin and Elon Musk, argue that space is empty and regulation could hinder progress, Indigenous perspectives challenge this notion, asserting that celestial bodies hold cultural significance. The article emphasizes the need for a shared ethical framework that respects these views while promoting environmental sustainability. It advocates for responsible exploration, including limiting mining activities and addressing space debris, to preserve the delicate balance of orbits and planetary bodies. The potential human consequences of space colonization, including labor conditions for workers, are also discussed, alongside the outdated nature of the Outer Space Treaty, which originally aimed to prevent territorial disputes. The author calls for a new approach that prioritizes care for space environments, regardless of differing beliefs about their inhabitance.

- Concerns about colonial practices in the space industry echo historical imperialism.

- Indigenous perspectives highlight the cultural significance of celestial bodies.

- A shared ethical framework is needed for responsible space exploration.

- Environmental sustainability is crucial to prevent damage from commercial activities.

- The Outer Space Treaty requires reevaluation to address modern space exploration challenges.

I would love to read about this. The irritating cookie and data selling bullshit off the bat put me off and then the author’s refusal to get to the point stopped me in my tracks. Give me a bulleted list of why. Colonial practices hurt the colonizer (or lead to a long-term negative outcome for the colonized space and society therein) and I’ll bite. I’m sure it’s in there somewhere but I can’t be arsed to dig it out.
