Removing Windows Recall Breaks File Explorer in Latest 24H2 Update

The latest Windows 11 24H2 update has sparked controversy due to its integration of the Recall feature, which is designed to create a searchable timeline of user activity. Disabling Recall has been found to break the modern File Explorer interface, reverting it to a more basic version reminiscent of Windows 7, complete with the removal of features like dark mode and tabs. This issue was highlighted by YouTuber Chris Titus Tech, who noted that while it is possible to disable Recall, doing so through conventional means disrupts File Explorer's functionality. Although there are workarounds, such as using Microsoft's DISM tool, these methods are not user-friendly and may not be accessible to the average user. The situation raises concerns about Microsoft's commitment to integrating AI features into Windows, especially given the backlash against Recall's privacy implications. The company had previously indicated that Recall would be an opt-in feature, but the current update suggests a more mandatory approach. This development indicates a significant shift in how Microsoft is positioning its software, prioritizing AI integration over user control.

- Disabling the Recall feature in Windows 11 24H2 breaks the modern File Explorer interface.

- Users have reported that removing Recall reverts File Explorer to a basic version with fewer features.

- Workarounds exist but are not user-friendly, highlighting potential accessibility issues for non-technical users.

- The integration of Recall raises privacy concerns and contradicts Microsoft's earlier opt-in promises.

- The situation reflects Microsoft's strong push towards AI features in its operating system.

Not to extreme with the knife, but it takes away all the advertorial ad-ons and shows how to disable more (including Edge and defaulting to Edge from system links).
