Bluesky, eXit, and vague thoughts about self-hosting

The recent surge of users migrating from Twitter/X to Bluesky, marked by the hashtag #eXit, has significantly increased the author's follower count on Bluesky from around 400 to over 1,000. With Bluesky's user base exceeding 19 million, it is becoming a notable social media platform. The author attributes this growth to being included in curated lists, or "Starter Packs," which recommend accounts based on themes like "Folk Horror and folklore." This situation has prompted the author to consider the feasibility of adapting their website to integrate with Bluesky's AT Protocol for self-hosting, allowing for direct message exchanges without relying on third-party services. Although Bluesky offers documentation for setting up a Personal Data Server (PDS), the author finds the current instructions too complex for their needs. They express a desire for simpler solutions, such as a PHP implementation that could facilitate this integration. Meanwhile, the author plans to continue manually posting on Bluesky alongside other social media platforms, acknowledging their slow progress on similar projects involving the ActivityPub protocol.

One of the biggest reasons that I have seen folks mention as to why they are currently avoiding hosting their own PDS[0], is that there is currently no migration path back to Bluesky's PDS system. You can go Bsky PDS -> self-hosted PDS, but there is no way back, yet.

Perhaps it's enough to POSSE (Publish on Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere)? Post your content on your own site, but link back to them on all your favourite social media sites.

That seems like a reasonable alternative to outright self-hosting a PDS instance.
