Intel Arc B580 Delivers Promising Linux GPU Compute Potential for Battlemage

The Intel Arc B580 graphics card has shown promising potential for GPU compute workloads on Linux, particularly for productivity users. Initial benchmarks using OpenCL and Level Zero indicate competitive performance against both Intel's Arc A-Series and rival offerings from AMD and NVIDIA. To utilize the full capabilities of the B580, users need to operate on Linux 6.12 or higher, along with Mesa 24.3 or newer. The testing was conducted on Linux 6.13 Git, utilizing the latest Intel Compute Runtime and Intel Graphics Compiler. Although the Compute Runtime does not explicitly mention support for the Battlemage architecture, it has been functional with the B580, albeit with some bugs. The benchmarks included a variety of graphics cards from Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD, providing a comprehensive comparison of GPU compute performance. Further testing and benchmarks are anticipated as the software stack matures.

- Intel Arc B580 shows strong GPU compute potential on Linux.

- Requires Linux 6.12+ and Mesa 24.3+ for optimal performance.

- Benchmarks compared B580 against various Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA cards.

- Initial tests indicate competitive performance but with some bugs.

- More benchmarks expected as software support improves.

I would love some analysis of perf/watts.

The intel arc cards are NOT power efficient based on other reviews. Very similar total power draw for the B580 to the 4070 based on other reviews. The perf/watts should be damning but this review doesn’t state that.

If your doing 1080p, looks like a good price per fps. But at 1440p like other mid cards, its a "maybe".

Would be nice if 16gig mem was the default to give some future headroom and for people wanting to do AI.

Reminder: try and use the latest intel GPU drivers on Linux. These intel devices are very new and constantly get software updates for obvious visual artefacts in 3D workloads (mostly games). Also improving performance in many cases.

Cool, glad to see another player. If I was gaming still, i'd try one out.
