Meta envisages social media filled with AI-generated users

Meta Platforms is planning to integrate AI-generated users into its social media platforms to enhance engagement among its 3 billion users. The company is rolling out various AI tools, including one that allows users to create AI characters on Instagram and Facebook. These AI personas will have profiles and the ability to generate and share content, similar to human accounts. Meta's vice-president of product for generative AI, Connor Hayes, emphasized the goal of making interactions with AI more social and entertaining. The initiative follows a trend among social media companies to adopt generative AI technologies to attract younger audiences. Other platforms, like Snapchat and TikTok, are also implementing AI tools for content creation and advertising. However, experts caution that AI-generated content could lead to misinformation and low-quality material, potentially undermining user trust and the value of human creators. To mitigate these risks, Meta has established guidelines requiring clear labeling of AI-generated content. Despite the potential for creative innovation, concerns remain about the emotional and experiential limitations of AI personas compared to human creators.

I don’t understand what value the users would get out of such an environment and therefore why they would keep interacting? I find the same with Snap’s AI they put at the top of everyone’s friend list, I’ve never sent so much as a hello to it and don’t understand why anyone would talk to it.
