Forum software NodeBB has added ActivityPub support

Forum software NodeBB has joined the fediverse, a decentralized social web that includes platforms like Mastodon and Pixelfed, utilizing the ActivityPub protocol. This move allows forum operators to connect their NodeBB forums with other federated services, enhancing their reach and interaction capabilities. The initiative was inspired by co-founder Julian Lam's desire to link NodeBB forums, which evolved from a centralized concept to a decentralized one after discovering ActivityPub. Funding from the NLNet Foundation facilitated the swift implementation of this protocol. NodeBB's new feature, available in version 4, will automatically federate new forums, while existing users can opt to connect with other ActivityPub-powered platforms. Unlike its competitor Discourse, NodeBB has integrated federation as a core feature rather than an add-on. Although NodeBB does not track usage statistics for privacy reasons, it has seen significant downloads, indicating a healthy user base. The software currently supports various forums, including those for Opera and MLB: The Show.
