Reagan National Airport Black Hawk-CRJ Crash

A tragic collision occurred on January 29, 2025, between a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter and a Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) while the CRJ was on final approach to Reagan National Airport (DCA). Initial investigations suggest that human error may have played a significant role, as air traffic control (ATC) recordings indicate a potential miscommunication between the Black Hawk crew and the tower regarding the identification of the CRJ. The Black Hawk was instructed to maintain visual separation from the CRJ, but it appears that the pilots may have been focused on a different aircraft. Factors contributing to the accident include the use of night vision goggles by the Black Hawk pilots, which can impair visibility of brightly lit objects, and the limitations of current air traffic management systems. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are expected to analyze cockpit voice and flight data recorders to determine the specifics of the incident. The discussion surrounding the crash has also touched on broader issues, including the impact of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives on aviation safety and innovation. While DEI efforts are important, some argue they may detract from the FAA's ability to adopt new technologies that could enhance safety.

- A Black Hawk helicopter collided with a CRJ during landing at Reagan National Airport.

- Human error and miscommunication between the Black Hawk crew and ATC are suspected causes.

- Night vision goggles and visibility issues may have contributed to the accident.

- The NTSB and FAA will investigate cockpit recordings and flight data for further insights.

- The incident has sparked debate on the impact of DEI initiatives on aviation safety.

It's astonishing to me that someone so rational and rigorous will, without breaking stride, declare without evidence that "DEI-based hiring will sadly increase the number of those with lower ability, just as in any other field of endeavor." Just an absolutely wild example of motivated reasoning from someone who almost certainly never forgets to check their blind spots (in the physical world).
