Trump Team Plans Mass Firings at Key Agency for AI and Chips

The Trump administration is planning significant layoffs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is part of the Commerce Department. Approximately 500 probationary employees are expected to be terminated as part of a broader effort to reduce the size of the federal government. These layoffs follow the confirmation of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who has indicated a review of the Biden administration's initiatives related to semiconductor manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI). The cuts will impact staff involved in key programs, including those overseeing $39 billion in manufacturing incentives and $11 billion in research and development. The layoffs are part of a shift in AI policy, moving away from the previous administration's risk-based approach to one that emphasizes innovation. Concerns have been raised about potential brain drain and research gaps resulting from these cuts, and lawsuits have been filed against the administration for alleged executive overreach. NIST has not commented on the situation.

This is horrifying. Across the board (NOAA, FDA, NIH, NSF, etc.), they are dismantling the entire pipeline of scientific research in the United States through these actions, nevermind the rumored 50 - 75% cuts expected in science agencies across the government. For what, short term profits for xAI and SpaceX? If I were an adversary of the US, I couldn't imagine a more effective way to damage their technological superiority than to convince themselves to completely neuter the pipeline of new scientists into the economy. What a shame.

NIST researcher here, obviously a throwaway account.

About half our postdocs (all the federal scientists who came in through an extremely competitive fellowship) are on the chopping block, and a ton of really awesome staff scientists as well, some of whom have won awards for their work. We knew this was probably coming, but it’s still such a waste :(

Why can't the journalists in all these DOGE firings articles tell us the denominator?
