Cuts to Science Funding and Why They Matter – Sean Carroll

The Trump administration, under the leadership of Elon Musk and the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, has proposed significant cuts to science funding in the United States, particularly targeting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). These cuts include a drastic reduction in indirect costs associated with NIH grants, which have been slashed from approximately 60% to just 15%. Additionally, there are rumors of a 60% budget cut for the NSF and potential layoffs affecting half of its workforce. These funding reductions are causing alarm among scientists, as they threaten not only the continuation of vital research but also the United States' standing in the global scientific community. Many researchers are reconsidering their plans to work or study in the U.S. due to these changes. The funding structure for scientific research in the U.S. has evolved organically over time, with various agencies supporting different fields. The proposed cuts could severely impact research across disciplines, from biomedical studies to fundamental physics, and may lead to a loss of talent and innovation in the country.

As Americans retreat from the world, hopefully China, Russia, EU, Japan and other countries will continue to fund basic research in the sciences.
