US family sues NASA for $80k in damages after space debris hits home

A family in Naples, Florida, is suing NASA for $80,000 in damages after space debris from the International Space Station hit their home, creating a hole in the roof and floor. The debris, a metallic cylinder slab from a cargo pallet released in 2021, struck the Otero family's home on March 8, 2024, while their son was inside. Fortunately, no one was injured. NASA confirmed the debris was from its flight support equipment after analyzing it at the Kennedy Space Center. The family's claim includes damages for non-insured property, business interruption, emotional distress, and the cost of third-party assistance. Their attorney emphasized the potential catastrophic consequences if the debris had hit differently. The lawsuit aims to establish a precedent for space debris claims in both private and public sectors. NASA has six months to respond to the claim.

80k feels like it’s in the “just settle up and throw in some extra for goodwill” territory for a large agency.

If space debris hit my home, I think I'd build an exhibit around it, put it up on Google Maps, and charge admission. Real space junk! You can touch it!

Why are they having to sue? Surely there’s a “you owe me money” form somewhere on NASAs website.
