Elon Musk's X faces big EU fines as paid checkmarks are ruled deceptive

Elon Musk's social media platform, referred to as X, is facing potential significant fines from the European Commission for allegedly deceptive practices related to its verification system. The EU claims that X's use of paid checkmarks for "verified accounts" misleads users and violates the Digital Services Act by not aligning with industry standards. The Commission highlighted concerns about the platform's impact on users' ability to discern authentic content and the misuse of verified accounts by malicious actors. Additionally, X is accused of lacking transparency in advertising practices and restricting access to public data for researchers. If found in breach, X could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover and be required to implement corrective measures. This development marks the first instance of a company facing preliminary findings of non-compliance with the Digital Services Act, emphasizing the EU's commitment to ensuring platform transparency and adherence to legislation.

Even in their official response to the EU’s announcement of investigating X last year they couldn’t help but dog-whistle

> It is important that this process remains free of political influence and follows the law.

No one mentioned politics except X, which makes me think Musk had a hand in at least editing this post (or someone else took a pass at his first draft).

This next part is also just great

> X is focused on creating a safe and inclusive environment for all users on our platform, while protecting freedom of expression, and we will continue to work tirelessly towards this goal.

“While protecting freedom of expression” which is fun because we have seen time and again their willingness to amplify one set of voices while putting down others or spreading false information followed by the hours, sometimes days later “community correction” CYA facade.

I hope we see some movement here - the check mark system definitely means next to nothing now other than “I paid for something that means nothing except to those easily deceived” which is a dangerous con imo
