Overture Maps Foundation Releases General Availability of Its Open Maps Datasets
The Overture Maps Foundation has launched its open maps datasets, featuring over 200 million addresses and four main themes, aimed at enhancing geospatial analysis and commercial applications across various industries.
Read original articleThe Overture Maps Foundation has announced the General Availability (GA) of its open maps datasets, which includes over 200 million addresses in an alpha release. This initiative aims to enhance interoperable open map services and products for various commercial applications and geospatial analysis. The datasets are structured in a documented schema, allowing developers to integrate additional spatial data easily. The GA release is expected to facilitate use cases across multiple industries, including local discovery, insurance, and automotive services. Key members like Meta, Microsoft, Esri, and TomTom are already utilizing these datasets in their offerings.
The alpha release features a new Address theme covering 14 countries, providing a unified schema for address data that can be linked with external datasets through unique identifiers. This will improve navigation, logistics, and search functionalities. The GA release includes four main themes: Buildings, which features 2.3 billion unique building footprints; Places of Interest, with data on nearly 54 million locations; Divisions, detailing administrative boundaries; and Base, which includes land and water data. The Transportation theme remains in Beta as further refinements are made. Overture Maps Foundation, established in 2022, focuses on creating reliable and extensible open map data, encouraging collaboration among its members to ensure the data remains accurate and up-to-date.
