Some condom and lubricant brands contain alarming levels of PFAS – study
A study found PFAS, or "forever chemicals," in brands like Trojan and K-Y Jelly, linked to health issues. Experts urge the industry to eliminate these chemicals from intimate products.
Read original articleA recent study has revealed that several brands of condoms and lubricants, including Trojan and K-Y Jelly, contain concerning levels of PFAS, known as "forever chemicals." These substances are linked to various health issues, including low birth weight, reduced sperm counts, infertility, and other reproductive problems. The research, conducted by Mamavation, highlighted that human skin absorbs these chemicals more readily than previously understood, particularly in sensitive areas like the penis and vagina, which have a high density of blood vessels. PFAS are used in products to enhance resistance to moisture and stains, but they do not break down naturally and are associated with serious health risks, including cancer and endocrine disruption. The study tested 29 reproductive health products and found PFAS in Trojan Ultra Thin Condoms and K-Y Jelly, among others. Experts are urging the industry to eliminate these chemicals from products that come into contact with sensitive body areas. Despite the widespread use of PFAS in consumer goods, federal regulations remain limited, although some state-level bans are emerging. The findings underscore the need for increased scrutiny and action to protect public health, particularly regarding products that are used in intimate contexts.

Forever chemicals are absorbed through human skin
A study from the University of Birmingham reveals 'forever chemicals' PFAS can be absorbed through human skin, contradicting previous beliefs. PFAS in consumer products pose risks, with some chemicals absorbed more easily.
Scientists find another way we're exposed to forever chemicals: Through our skin
A study found PFAS in beauty products can penetrate skin, entering the bloodstream. Shorter chains absorb more, raising health concerns. Awareness and choosing PFAS-free products are advised to reduce exposure risks.
PFAS absorbed through skin at levels higher than previously thought
New research from the University of Birmingham shows high skin absorption of toxic PFAS forever chemicals, challenging previous beliefs. PFAS, found in makeup, pose health risks including cancer and birth defects. Further research is needed.
High Levels of PFAS 'Forever Chemicals' Found in Food and Drink Products – Study
A study on Science Direct found high PFAS levels in food like white rice, eggs, red meat, seafood, and coffee. PFAS in blood and breast milk pose health risks. Dietary changes are advised to reduce exposure. US and EU regulate PFAS in food packaging.
What's the deal with PFAS, a.k.a. 'forever chemicals'?
PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," pose serious health risks and persist in the environment. The EPA has set new drinking water limits, while experts call for stronger regulations and consumer awareness.
"PFAS are a class of about 15,000 chemicals often used to make products resistant to water, stains and heat. They are called “forever chemicals” because they do not naturally break down, and are linked to cancer, liver problems, thyroid issues, birth defects, kidney disease, decreased immunity and other serious health problems.
PFAS are also considered to be reproductive toxicants and endocrine disruptors linked to low birth weight, reduced sperm counts, pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, infertility and shorter duration of breastfeeding."
