Apple Intelligence Now Available in New iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, Sequoia Dev Betas

Apple has released the first developer betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, introducing early versions of its new Apple Intelligence features. Developers can opt into these betas or remain on the standard beta track. To use Apple Intelligence, devices must be compatible, specifically requiring an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any Apple silicon-equipped iPad or Mac. After updating, users can enable Apple Intelligence through the Settings app, although they must join a waitlist for access.

Current features include enhanced Writing Tools for text editing across various apps, a redesigned Siri interface that allows for both voice and text commands, and improved Mail and Messages functionalities with smart replies and message summaries. The Photos app now supports natural language requests for creating slideshows and searching for videos.

Notably, some features, such as Image Playground and ChatGPT integration, are not yet available. Apple plans to roll out additional capabilities over time, with the official launch of Apple Intelligence expected in beta later this fall. However, it will not be available immediately with the initial software updates in September. Developers should be aware that these features are still in early development stages. The potential for a public beta for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 remains uncertain.

For those who are not in the US, I managed to enable it on macOS by setting three things :

- In General > Language and region : Both Language to English US AND region to US - In Apple Intelligence : Set siri language to English US.

Then you need to reboot your mac. You'll have to apply to a waiting list, in Settings > Apple Intelligence. In my case it only took a few minutes.

Same procedure doesn't work for me on iPad where it says I'm region locked. Even with a VPN. As far as I remember, Apple introduced a pretty efficient daemon in iOS/iPadOS to detect region (for Europe's App Store easing of restrictions) and it's likely what's blocking there.

I'll refrain from too many early comments, but it seems fairly limited.

Asking a question about macOS (How to change DNS) will trigger a AI response that quotes the macOS user guide, while asking the same question about iOS will default to a basic Google Search. Haven't seen any fallback to ChatGPT, that may not be part of that beta.

Mail summarizing looks OK, but fails on some very long emails. When it works, the summary is fairly short (about 3 sentences max) which is probably pretty adequate.
