Group1 Unveils First Potassium-Ion Battery in 18650 Format

Group1 has announced the launch of the world's first Potassium-ion battery (KIB) in the widely used 18650 cylindrical format. This innovative battery technology is designed to be sustainable and cost-effective, eliminating the need for critical minerals such as nickel, cobalt, copper, and lithium. The KIB integrates seamlessly into existing lithium-ion battery (LIB) manufacturing processes, facilitating a smooth transition for manufacturers. The unveiling took place at the 14th annual Beyond Lithium Conference, where Group1 showcased the battery's development journey and its competitive advantages. The KIB utilizes Kristonite™, a specially engineered 4V cathode material, which enhances performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and sodium-ion batteries. The new batteries are expected to achieve a gravimetric energy density of 160-180Wh/kg, making them suitable for demanding mobility applications. Group1 aims to alleviate supply chain pressures and promote domestic manufacturing of critical battery technologies. The company, founded in 2021 and based in Austin, Texas, is committed to revolutionizing the battery industry with eco-friendly and efficient energy storage solutions.
