CNN, Reuters launching digital paywalls

CNN and Reuters have announced the launch of digital paywalls for their online content. CNN will implement a paywall that requires some users in the U.S. to pay $3.99 per month for unlimited access to its articles after they exceed a certain number of free articles. Subscribers will gain access to exclusive features, original documentaries, curated articles, and a reduced number of advertisements. Meanwhile, Reuters will introduce a subscription model for its website and mobile app, starting at $1 per week, with a simple pricing structure that avoids introductory offers or unexpected price hikes. This subscription model will initially roll out in Canada, followed by several European countries and then the U.S. Both organizations emphasize the importance of providing trusted news in an era of misinformation, with the paywalls aimed at ensuring sustainable funding for quality journalism. The announcements come just weeks before the U.S. presidential election, highlighting the growing trend among news organizations to adopt subscription-based funding models.

> Those who subscribe will receive exclusive election features, original documentaries and curated articles, and fewer ads, the company said.

Having a paywall on CNN will likely make me less likely to visit their site. If they somehow managed to convince me to pay, I’d expect the paid experience to be ad free.
