Microsoft wants $30 if you want to delay Windows 11 switch

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 home users can delay their transition to Windows 11 for an additional year by purchasing Extended Security Updates (ESU) for $30. This option was first mentioned in December 2023, but this is the first time a price has been disclosed. Windows 10 will reach its end of support on October 14, 2025, after which it will no longer receive security updates or bug fixes. However, specialized versions like Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) and Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) will continue to receive updates beyond this date. The ESU program for consumers will be available closer to the end of support in 2025. Currently, over 62% of Windows systems are still running Windows 10, while only 33% have upgraded to Windows 11 since its launch in October 2021. Microsoft is also set to offer ESU to enterprise customers starting November 1, 2025. The company encourages users to check their PCs for compatibility with Windows 11 and consider upgrading to a new device if necessary, emphasizing a smooth transition to the new operating system.

Title is a little bit click-baity. Its $30 if you want a year of extra security patches, but if you just do nothing then they don't force you onto Windows 11 and they don't magically take $30 out of your account.

Inevitably they make $300 million in revenue but most people don't pay and there are $3 billion in costs from breaches.

So, HN, what's the consensus? Are you going to switch when support for Windows 10 runs out, or are you not? Or are you going to switch to Linux?

What about for your non-tech family members?

“That’s a nice Windows you got there. Would be a shame if something happened to it.”
