Meta has lifted the extra severe penalties imposed on former President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts for content rule violations. Trump's accounts were previously subject to stricter penalties compared to other users, with the possibility of full suspension for minor infractions. With the Republican National Convention approaching, Meta announced that Trump will now be treated like any other user to allow political expression equally. Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, stated that the previous restrictions were in response to exceptional circumstances and were no longer necessary. Trump, who has been posting regularly since June 30th, has a significant following on both platforms, with 34 million followers on Facebook and nearly 25 million on Instagram. This decision marks a shift in Meta's approach to handling political figures on its platforms, particularly in light of Trump's history of pushing the boundaries of content policies.
